Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaws

This course is an update on the medications associated with the development of MRONJ, as well as the recognition, diagnosis, and management of the disease process.

Objectives:

  • Describe the normal bone remodeling process and identify risk factors for osteoporosis
  • Explain the mechanism of action of antiresorptive and antiangiogenic drugs
  • Identify commonly used antiresorptive and antiangiogenic drugs
  • Discuss preventive measures and treatment options for patients at risk of development of MRONJ
  • Discuss current treatment strategies for management of patients with MRONJ

Update on Anticoagulation Management for the Dental Patient and Antibiotic Prophylaxis Guidelines for Dental Treatment

This course is an update on the commonly used anticoagulation and antiplatelet medications as well as a review of the 2021 American Heart Association Bacterial Endocarditis Prophylaxis Guidelines.

Objectives:

  • Identify commonly used anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs and familiarize yourself with the mechanisms of action
  • Describe the perioperative management and considerations for patients who require temporary discontinuation of their anticoagulation or antiplatelet therapy.
  • Implement the newly updated antibiotic prophylaxis recommendations for prevention of infective endocarditis in the dental patient.
